For example, I went to Xinghua Book shop with Bobo, Luxiaoxiang-- one of bobo's good classmates and Luxiaoxiang's mother. We enjoyed our reading very much.

Today is a sunny day. I am very happy because this afternoon I swim with my friends Daikezheng and Yukaihang again in Beilun power swimming pool. We met our classmates Gutonglu and Wuwenchao. We played ball together in the swimming pool. It’s very interesting .Swimming is my favorite sport! It's a sunny day still. I am having a great time. Firstly, I am very happy to bought many ice-creams with my parent tonight. I love ice-creams! I like fruit ice-cream best. Tonight I ate two ice-creams. They are so yummy! I can eat 20 ice-creams one day.
I watched two movies tonight with my friend DaiKezheng in Dynamicinstitute. One movie was about a superman. Another is about a bear. They were very interesting.[s:11] Today is Tuesday. It’s still sunny and hot but the sky is very beautiful. I got up at 7:30. Then I ate breakfast. I didn’t think today’s breakfast was good. I watched TV around 8:30 in the morning. I like watching TV. I did my math homework and wrote my composition. I didn’t like them. I think they were very boring. About 10:00 AM, my mother told me the password of the computer. I played computer form 10:00 to 11:00.
In the noon, I ate egg, meat and rice for lunch . My grandmother cooked all the foods for us.
In the afternoon I went to Mr.Kui’s home to learned math and Chinese. This evening I played badminton with my friend Wuwenchao, then we played basketball with YUkaihang.

Daily Routines
A routing is something we do regularly. Our daily routine, therefore, is the things that we usually do every day. For most of us, there include eating, sleeping, making ourselves and our apartment clean, working and having some kind of recreation and social life. It is in our work, social life and recreation .
My son Bobo is in his summer holiday now. From his diaries above we know his daily routine:
7:40 Get up, wash and dress ( Summer is his favorite as the easier dress)
7:50 Breakfast
8:05 Clearn home
8:30-10:00 watch TV , do homework and reading
10:00 deal with computer
11:00 do homework
11:20 play flute
11:30 have lunch
12:00 free or do homework
2:00 reading
3:00-5:00 learn math and Chinese
6:00 have dinner
6:30-8:30 do sports or reading
During his private study periods he will work on assignments, doing the necessary research and writing essays and recite some English and Chinese articles. When he learn math and Chinese with his classmates during the afternoon, it’s also a kind socialize they will usually buy snakes and soft drinks in the break.
Sports is his favorite and he always play basketball and badminton with his friends in evening and weekend.
Reading is his another habit. We always borrow 8 books once a week from Zhongrui library. It's very sweet when we read together.[s:2] 2008-7-11
I will buy the magazine Comic World today. It is 4 Yuan. One month have three books. There are many comic in the magazine. It is my favorite. I like the comic story Rabbit Gang in the magazine best. The story is about rabbit. It’s very funny! The comic will publish a book soon. I want to buy the book as soon as possible. The write is 十九番。He is about 25 years old. He is very cool.
My name is Zhouyunfan. I am 13 years old. I am a student of Donghai School. I will be middle school student soon. I am thin and funny. I like P.E but I dislike math. I have many friends in my school. My favorite animal is cat. I don’t like dog. I like playing computergame and playing basketball because they are exciting. My favorite food is chicken. My family has three people. . They learn English with us. Luxiaoxiang is my best friend. He is 13 years old. He is tall and a little fat. He likes read books and plays computer games. His mother is very strict to him. She told Luxiaoxiang that he must work hard during this summer holiday. Luxiaoxiang was very angry.
I read the book 藏地密码 1 and 藏地密码2 tonight. It’s really fascination! I like the books very much and want to read the story whole night. You can buy the book on line. American Professor on the Interaction
of Knowledge and Interest
Zhao Wei: September 10th is Chinese National Teachers’ Day, and October 5th is World Teachers’Day. We can understand the importance of the occupation of teacher. So what kind of role do you think a teacher should play?
Michael Pettis: Anyone can and should be a teacher, whether or not he works in a school. Teaching others the things we have learned is one of the most important services we can provide to society.
Zhao: Some parents believe that “quality education”means to be versatile.So they make their children take various extracurricular classes,learn such as piano,computer science, and foreign languages. Do you think this way of educating could attain the end of“quality education”?
Michael Pettis: I think it is great for kids to learn many things but sometimes I think we confuse learning and studying. Learning is a pleasure, whereas studying is something you do because you don’t want your parents to yell at you. If studying a topic leads you to love it, then it is worthwhile, but if it becomes just a chore, then I’m not sure it can serve much good. Obviously, we need to combine the creativity that comes from playing with the discipline that comes from studying, but a kid who spends all his time taking lessons may end up with few interests or passions. Kids need free time to think about what they have learned and to develop on their own.
Zhao: You have taught at the best universities in US and China. As an experienced professor, what do you think are the features of the students in these two countries that are worth learning from each other?
Michael Pettis: My students at Tsinghua remind me in many ways of my students at Columbia. They are very engaging, intellectually driven and have many of the same crazy dreams. Of course the Tsinghua students work much harder at their studies. And the Columbia students spend much more time on their outside projects--editing newspapers, writing novels, creating amusing software--but that is because they are given the time and are expected to do so.
[color=Sienna]My Tsinghua students believe that professors know everything about their subjects, and that education consists of our passing knowledge down to them. They are extremely respectful and eager to accept whatever I say. My Columbia students are much more critical and much more likely to question their professors. They are also eager to explore alternative viewpoints and love to prove their professors wrong. I, of course, am delighted to see that, and will always raise the grade of a student who can put up a good fight, even if he is wrong. But these differences reflect the differences in the educational systems, not in the students themselves. The students in these two schools are among the smartest in the world--much smarter than their professors, by the way--and smart people everywhere have a lot in common.[/color]
Zhao: You have said the most efficient learning comes from “playing.” Could you explain what you said?
Michael Pettis:[color=Sienna] I think this is a common sense. When you really like what you’re doing, you work very hard at it. So for example, students love computer games. Many people say that computer games are waste of time. But actually, people who play a lot of computer games tend to have much more advanced abilities to understand the information quickly. While the students love the games, they enjoy them. So they are pushing themselves as far as they can go. [/color]
Zhao: That’s true if the students love what they are learning. But to some aspect of knowledge that they don’t like, or even are bored with, how can you make them learn?
[color=Blue]Michael Pettis: I believe that any student who doesn’t like an aspect of knowledge must have a very bad teacher, because all knowledge is interesting. I don’t believe there are people who naturally dislike any area of studies. And you learn to dislike knowledge because your mother and father make you study 12 hours a day. Your teachers yell at you. So we need a combination. We need enough discipline so that the students go forward. We also need enough openness and enough freedom so that the students can discover for themselves how interesting it is a type of knowledge. If you look at a kid who loves football, he knows every team in the world, he knows the top player of every team in the world, he knows how well they play. He has so much information, and this information is very similar to what you would learn if you study history. But students don’t know that much of history as they know about football. Why? Because they really love football. Now, if every student in China was forced to study football in school, the knowledge of football would go down and down tremendously1. So the job of teacher is really to help the students to love what they are doing.[/color]

赵：有些家长认为素质教育就是让孩子多才多艺。于是他们让孩子参加各种课外辅导班，学习钢琴、计算机、外语等等。您认为这样能达到素质教育的目的吗？
迈克尔·佩蒂斯：我想让小孩子多学点东西是很好的，但我想有时我们把学习和攻读的概念混淆了。学习是一种快乐，而攻读则是你为了不让父母冲你嚷嚷而要做的事情。如果攻读某个科目让你喜欢上它，那就是值得的。但是如果它变成了需应付的差事，那我可不认为它会有什么好处。显然，我们要把从玩儿中获得的创造力与从攻读中得到的学科知识结合起来。但如果孩子的时间都用来上课的话，那他到头来可能就没有什么兴趣和热情了。孩子需要自由的时间去思考他们所学到的东西，去自我发展。
赵：作为一个在中美两国优秀大学有丰富任教经验的教授，您认为中美两国学生各有哪些特点值得互相学习呢？
迈克尔·佩蒂斯：我在清华的学生在很多方面都使我想起了我在哥伦比亚大学的学生。他们非常勤学，求知欲很强，而且还有很多相同的美好梦想。当然，清华的学生学习要用功得多。而哥伦比亚大学的学生则把更多的时间花在课外活动上——编写报纸、创作小说、制作有趣的软件——但这是因为他们有时间而且受到鼓励去做这些。
我的清华学生认为，教授知道他们学科的一切知识，并认为教育的一部分就是我们把知识传授给他们。他们对教授极为尊敬，而且急于接受我说的一切。我的哥伦比亚大学学生更有批判性，更倾向于怀疑教授。他们还渴望探求不同的观点，喜欢证明他们的教授是错的。当然，我很高兴看到这些，而且经常会给那些挑起激烈争论的学生加分，即使他是错的。但是这些不同点反映了教育体系的不同，不是学生本身。这两所学校的学生属于世界上最聪明的学生之列——而且比他们的教授要聪明得多——天下聪明人都有很多共同点。
赵：您曾说过最有效的学习来自“玩”，能解释一下吗？
迈克尔·佩蒂斯：我想这是一个常识。当你确实喜欢你所做的事情时，你就会很卖力地去做。比如，学生们喜欢电脑游戏。很多人认为玩电脑游戏是浪费时间。但实际上，那些经常玩电脑游戏的人，往往有更强的迅速理解信息的能力。当学生喜欢游戏时，他们就会乐在其中。因此他们就会促使自己做出最大的努力。
赵：如果学生喜欢他们所学的东西，那确实是这样。但是对于那些他们不喜欢，甚至是厌烦的知识，您怎样让他们学呢？
迈克尔·佩蒂斯：我认为，任何不喜欢某方面知识的学生，一定是有一个很糟糕的老师，因为所有的知识都是有趣的。我不相信有谁是天生不喜欢某一方面的学习的。你变得不喜欢这些知识，是因为你的父母让你每天学习12小时，你的老师训斥你。因此我们需要一种结合。我们需要足够的纪律让学生上进，我们同样需要足够的开放和足够的自由，让学生可以自己去发现这是一种多么有趣的知识。如果你观察一下一个喜欢足球的孩子，他知道世界上所有的足球队，他知道世界上每个足球队的顶尖球员，他知道他们踢得怎样。他拥有很多的信息，而这些信息与你学习历史时可能学到的非常相似。但学生们却不像了解足球那样知道这么多的历史知识。为什么？因为他们确实喜欢足球。现在，如果中国所有的学生都被强迫在学校学习足球，那么学习足球知识的兴趣将会极大降低。所以教师的工作其实就是帮助学生喜欢上他们在做的事。

We are missing you very much. It’s so pity that I couldn’t go to Shanghai to visit you this time. But we will try to go to Shanghai in August. My birthday is in July 18th. I want have a good party with my friends.
I watched a very interesting movie Kongfu Panda this morning with my mother. I like the Panda very much!
Gros bisous -----for our birthday and friendship! Hi Bobo, My grandma is typing and I am telling her what to type. My grandma said that I should tell you about my unusual haircut. I have long hair running down the middle of my head but the rest of my head is shaved. The hair on the top is about 6 cm long and I look like a skunk and smell like one too. It is called a Mohawk Hair Cut. If you look up Mohawk Indians on Google you will see what my hair looks like.
I went to a camp this summer. A camp is a place where you go away from home, in the woods. We sleep in cabins on bunkbeds and we all eat together in a cook house. My favorite type of camp food was the pancakes. Do you ever eat pancakes? I got to shoot a pellet gun and a bow and arrow. A pellet gun is a gun but it doesn't shoot bullets it shoots little round pieces of metal. You don't shoot people but targets. My parents but a hot tub and it is on our deck so I can put my bathing suit on anytime I want and jump in to the water. I don't remember if I told you but my school moved into a new building that is closer to my home. Next year we will have to have a passport to go to the school because there are too many people going to the school.
I watched KungFu Panda with my family and my dad just about peed his pants laughing so much.
I am going to be going to Moose Lake Gospel Camp with my mother and sister in August. I play the electric guitar now. I got it for my birthday. I had to have my guitar instructor changed because he is moving to Calgary about 380 kilometers away and that would be too far to go for a guitar lesson. What are you doing this summer that is fun? I am going to be in grade five next year. What grade will you be in. Grade five is really difficult and we have to do lots of homework, maybe up to 10 minutes of homework a night.
I have a job now. It is a flyer deliver route. I get paid about $100.00 per month for delivering packages of flyers to 60 house close to my house. That is about 700 yuan. Maybe I will save my money and come to visit you next June. I have a present that my grandmother will be bringing back for you. I hope that you like it. mom Ni Hao from Edmonton, I just wanted to let everyone know that I made it to my daughter's home and everything is fine. I missed my plane on Tuesday because I was busy signing a contract to teach at a University in Nanjing. The first college I saw wanted me to sign but when I saw the apartment, I refused. It was on the 17th floor of a Highrise apartment in downtown Nanjing but it was about the size of one bedroom and livingroom from my old apartment. No stove even......then I went to Nantong and the college was way out of town and totally isolated and it had no living room at all. I couldn't believe it and I felt that I was really wasting my time taking a bus out there... but I had peace that God would make a way for me and the day that I was to leave Shanghai to fly back to Edmonton, the agency offered me a great job and they guarenteed me a two bedroom apartment with a seperate living room and kitchen and bedroom. After all, I need the room so that everyone can stay with me when they come to visit. They said that I would only have to teach 14 classes a week over three days. Did I mention that I loved Nanjing????? I liked it more than Shanghai or Beijing or Hong Kong... something was so restful about it. I plan on returning to Shanghai and leaving my suitcases so I can travel to Beilun on the bus over that huge bridge. I couldn't sleep on the airplane back to Edmonton so I only dozed off for about 1/2 hour...but the plane was great because it had private movies. I could watch T.V. (in English) or a number of movies. It was great. I am very happy to see my grandbabies...they are WONDERFUL. I am still tired and it is Saturday evening when I am writing this. I hope that I don't suffer so much when I return to Beilun. Anyway, I miss you terribly. Please write when you get the chance and I will reply as soon as possible. Love Karen Dearest Jojo,

How are you!
We are so delighted to get you and Jojo’s mail. Thanks God that you have arrived home very well.
It’s imaginable how exciting when you and your families and friends gathering again in home.
All the friends miss you very very much. Karen, you are such a special present for all the friends. Many friends asked me when would you come back Beilun and had a good chatting in the Xiaoshan English Corner again. I told friends you had promised me that you would visit us during some holiday. Yes, it’s not so far from Nangjing to Ningbo.
An old friend Vaseem visited our EC two weeks ago. He was the English teacher of Dong Hai Experimental 6 years ago. Look at the photo, I this jojo’s hair style is just similar to him.
It’s so sweet when old friends gathering again. Vaseem came from UK and he have traveled lots of countries. It’s the second time he came China and he want to travel north of China this time. When I asked him:” what’s the goal for your traveling?” he simple replied:” for understand!”
Yes, traveling for better understanding. Karen, you are so lucky that you have traveled so many places. I believe you got very special vision in your life.
All is OK around me but it’s so hot these days in Ningbo. My mother comes to my home every day and we always have lunch together. She keep reads the Bible everyday but she told me it’s difficult to remember all.
Bobo is enjoying his holiday---for the ice creams, computer game, books, sports. He will join a summer camp be end of the month with 25 kids of Cildren’s EC. I hope he will enjoy it very much.
This Friday will be his birthday. He want to celebrate it with his fellows. He is taller than me just this summer. I wonder if Jojo is taller that his mother also.

i have no summer holiday[s:10] It’s summer in Beilun. The weather is sunny and hot. People are wearing shirts and skirts. Everyone have a good time. Friends are swimming in swimming pool. I enjoy visiting you today very much. We took bus to Beilun and arrive home around 4pm. I feel a little tried after I was back home but feel well now after a good dinner.
I like the Ningbo University Zone Library very much. There are many books in it. I want to go to the library and visit you again next time. Hi Guys and Gals, I miss you cheerful smiles and sweeeeeeet personalities. I hope that you are having a nice summer without being roasted. I heard that it was 37 in Ningbo. It is between 13 and 17 in the mornings here rising all the way up to 27 a couple of days a week. Mostly it is between 20 and 23. Enough of the weather.
God is Good. I am starting a job with the Government of Alberta tomorrow. It is in the same office that I worked in before I came to China in 2006. I will be preparing a bunch of Doctors files `to be added into a gov. library filing system. I am being paid $20.00 per hour and plan to purchase a laptop computer before I return to China. During the 6 weeks that I work I will make over 30,000 Yuan. A chinese immigrant FRIEND is teaching me some helpful phrases so I should know a little bit more chinese when I return. There is a change of plans. Seeing that I am making so much money everyday, I think that I will stay right up until the 29th of August. I will return to Shanghai on August 30 which gives me one day before classes start.
I signed a contract at Nanjing Aeronautics and Astronautics University , or NUAA for short. .It is made up of 17 colleges.WOW They promised me a two bedroom apartment but it is in downtown Nanjing so I don`t know if the students will come and visit me. The school said that I will only have to work 3 days a week so I will have lots of time to come and visit you and bug you.
I am still with my daughter and her family. I think that my son in law is getting tired of me but there is no friction between us. I plan on moving in with someone from my church on Monday night and then moving to stay with other friends in a week or two. People are sure fat here. (don`t tell anyone that I said that.....not very Christian) I feel quite skinny so you know how fat they are. People don`t eat fruits and veggies like they do in China. Gee I miss you.
I am enjoying spending time with the grandkids and think that it will be difficult to leave them. My granddaughter even let me curl her hair and she really liked it. I took my grandson to the exhibition, which is sort of like Harbor Land, but is only in Edmonton for 10 days. I`ve been buying lots of clothes that are on sale here because it is just about the end of summer so they put the summer clothes on for 50 to 70% off. My old car is still running and I am getting spoiled not riding the crowded buses.Well I will go for now. Write me, if you get the chance, and let me know how you are doing .
