Smiling volunteers win another Olympic gold for Beijing
+ -
14:14, August 15, 2008
As China's 600-strong Olympic team fight for medals on the home soil, a separate team nearly 3,000 times its size are trying to snatch another gold for their country -- with friendly smiles.

A volunteer (C) reads colorful notes bearing wishes of citizens on a message board at a volunteer station in Beijing, capital of China, July 30, 2008. About 400,000 city volunteers provide tourist services at 550 volunteer stations in Beijing from July 1 to October 8.

Of the host city's 1.7 million volunteers, about 100,000 are working at the Games sites -- mainly the competition venues and the Olympic villages -- or on the bus fleet shuttling between these sites.

The host city actually looks younger with these smiling young men and women, mostly in their early 20s and all wearing blue "Beijing 2008" T-shirts.

"Visitors to the Olympics can be forgiven for thinking that China is a land of unnatural youthfulness where nobody is older than 30," said New York Times reporter Charles McGrath.

Close as they are to the Games, few of these volunteers can sit back and enjoy the competition. Even the lucky ones working at the competition venues may not witness all the historic moments.

Pan Xingyu, 21, works at the National Aquatics Center, or the Water Cube, but has never caught a glimpse of her idol Michael Phelps. "He always competes in the morning but I always work afternoon or night shifts."

She also missed the excitement of the diving competitions -- in which China has won all the four golds offered so far, because she was either on duty at the entrance or maintaining order at the spectators' stand.

"I had a peep or two when the audience roared in excitement. But it's better to watch TV later on," she said.

At the end of a noisy, tiring day, Pan and her colleagues are always eager to get back for some rest, but their team leaders sometimes call them together to play games, hoping to help them relax and enhance cohesion of the group.

An engineering major at the prestigious Tsinghua University, Pan admitted her excitement at the job is subsiding. "It is very tiring and stressful. Sometimes you need to deal with tough issues and people would complain if you're not doing well enough," said the soft-spoken junior student. "But when I graduate from school, I guess I won't be afraid of any tough job (with this experience)."

For Pan and her peers, some of whom stand for several hours in the scorching sun to point the way for the Olympic visitors, all their hard work pays off when they are given a heartfelt "thank you" and compliments in return.

Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, who attended the Beijing Olympics opening on Aug. 8, said he was "especially moved" by the volunteers because of their enthusiasm and good manners. "Chinese young people have dreams...They deserve our expectation and admiration," he said in an interview earlier this week.

A senior official with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) also paid tribute to the Beijing Games' volunteers at a press conference on Wednesday. "All the volunteers are dedicated... we have to say they are doing a fantastic job," said IOC's Olympic Games executive director Gilbert Felli.

Khalid Malik (L), United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, gives out the certificate of honor to Olympic volunteer Liang Su at a ceremony held in Beijing, Aug. 7, 2008. A celebration, co-hosted by UN's China offices and Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the 29th Olympiad, was held on Thursday to encourage and show gratitude to volunteers devoting to Beijing Olympics and China's social development.

These volunteers, many of whom are trained to be engineers, journalists or doctors, are doing a wide variety of temporary jobs created by the Games: running errands and distributing games results, conducting security checks, driving golf carts, housekeeping at athletes and media villages, or simply standing there and greeting everyone.

Frankly speaking, not everyone speaks good English and many, particularly the freshman students, lack the adequate problem solving skills their jobs demand. But they are certainly doing their best to help, and are hoping this hard-won opportunity will help prove their capability and enrich their experience, which might be a positive element in their future employment.

Xu Zhou, 19, has one of the "boring" jobs that is totally irrelevant to what she is trained to be -- a communication engineer.

She travels at least 20 times a day on a media bus commuting between the Main Press Center and the North Star Media Village, a 20-minute ride, to provide language assistance for foreign reporters aboard and answer their questions.

Most of the days, Xu, as well as 2,000 other volunteers who work for the media bus fleet, can only catch a glimpse of the ongoing competitions on TV during their breaks. But Monday was a red-letter day for the bespectacled sophomore from Beijing Communications University: she had a day off and she got a ticket to the Olympic Green Tennis Center through a lucky draw on campus.

To fully exploit the hard-won chance, she arrived at 5 a.m. and didn't leave until midnight, watching as many games as possible as the ticket was valid for all 65 matches played in the day.

"It was exciting to see Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal play," said Xu, adding that she was happy to be among a home crowd that cheered Lu Yen-hsun from Chinese Taipei on to a hard victory against British Andy Murray.

Starting her service on July 25, Xu said she would stick to her position until the assignment is over by Aug. 25. "My job here might be a trivial detail in the running of the whole Games, but details matter in the Games' final success," she said.

Besides the 100,000 volunteers directly serving the Olympians and journalists, the other 1.6-million-strong volunteers in the Chinese capital have seldom come under the spotlight.

Among them are pensioners -- the oldest one already 103 years old -- that patrol streets and communities, students that answer tourists' questions at roadside information kiosks, skilled taxi drivers who have been handpicked to access the locked Olympic area in northern Beijing, and chefs selected from renowned Beijing hotels to help cook the Olympic dishes.

But a set of snapshots, showing a young female volunteer holding a foreigner, who fainted shortly in the street probably for a slight sunstroke, in her arms and feeding him water, spread quickly in China's vast Internet community, and stirred up a great sensation.

"You look so beautiful when you extend your helping hands. You are the embodiment of the traditional virtues of the Chinese -- hospitable and caring," read an online comment seen on qq.com.

At 103, Beijing resident Fu Yiquan still patrols the street near the Temple of Heaven in downtown Beijing as a "security volunteer," a job he has been doing for 30 years.

The perseverance of Fu and tens of thousands of other pensioners in Beijing impressed David Tool, a former colonel of the U.S. Army who now teaches at a Beijing university and hunts awkward translations in his spare time.

"These pensioners are doing a great job. The Beijing Games are a grand occasion. I, too, want to share the excitement," said Tool.

During the Games, he is serving as a volunteer at an information kiosk close to the Sanlitun bar street, one of the areas most frequented by foreigners in eastern Beijing.

"No matter who wins the most medals at the Games, one thing is clear -- these volunteers will win the hearts and minds of visitors to Beijing," Achim Steiner, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme, said on the eve of the Beijing Games.

Yao Ming explodes in China's first win

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Yao Ming had 30 points and seven rebounds to put up the first win when China defeated Angola 85-68 Thursday in the men's basketball preliminary round at the Beijing Olympic Games.

China (1-2) continued on the way to produce one of the best Olympic journeys after losing to the United States 101-70, the less deficit in the Olympic history against the U.S., and pulled world champions Spain down to the overtime before losing 85-75.

Yao was playing his best match so far in the competition as he also delivered three assists and blocked four times in 30:49 minutes. The Houston Rockets center shot 10-out-of-11 in the field and committed only one turnover before he was took off 3:05 minutes left in the game.

"My teammates gave me a great help. They made the open shots to put China ahead in the first quarter. We still have a long road to go (to enter the next round). I won't say Germany is an easier opponent than Greece. We'll take one game with one time," Yao said.

Five Chinese had double-digit numbers with point guard Sun Yue having 11 points, and Liu Wei, Zhu Fangyu and Yi Jianlian adding 10 each.

"We wanted the win more than Angola. We came out strong and never gave up even they closed the scoring," said Sun, who will play for the Los Angeles Lakers next season.

China led 28-14 in the first quarter, but let loose in the second period when Angola cut the deficit to two points on 44-42 with a 21-9 run.

"China had a perfect first quarter and we had the second. But we could not defend Yao. He is too big inside the paint," said Joaquim Gomes, who led Angola with 17 points.

Angola were held to only nine points in the third quarter when China opened it up by 65-51 to enter the last period.

"We missed some of our starters, like Olimpio Cipriano and Vladimir Jeronimo. Both played today but didn't give out what they should have given to the team. We closed the gap in the second quarter but China pulled away in the third. After that we could do nothing," Angola's coach Alberto Carvalho said.

China will take on Germany on Saturday and Greece on Monday. The hosts have to win at least one game to advance into the top eight round.

"The game against Angola reminded us that there is no easy win to score at Olympics. We have to concentrate throughout the game. We can beat any team if we play like we did against world champions Spain," Liu Wei said.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping telegraphed the General Administration of Sport on Monday to express concern and sympathy for track star Liu Xiang, who pulled out of the men's 110-meter hurdles in a first-round heat with a foot injury at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Chinese state leaders were very concerned with the Shanghai native's injury, and hoped the gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics would get timely treatment and recover soon, said Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

He expressed warm regards and encouragement to Liu and his coach Sun Haiping in the telegraph, which he sent soon after learning the news of Liu's withdrawal at the National Stadium.

"We all understand that Liu quit the race due to injury," Xi said. "We hope he will relax and focus on recovery. We hope that after he recovers, he will continue to train hard and struggle harder for the national glory."

Liu and his coach were greatly moved when they learnt the content of the telegraph from the top officials of the General Administration of Sport. They thanked the state leaders for their concern and encouragement.

The 25-year-old, one of the biggest sporting stars in the country, said he would actively cooperate with the doctors and try to return for future events as soon as possible.

A faster Liu Xiang will arise, says injured hurdler
+ -
21:36, August 19, 2008
Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang has said he will run even faster after he fully recovers from a tendon injury that forced the 2004 Olympic champion out of the Beijing Olympics on Monday morning.

In an open letter posted on Tuesday on the online journal of Feng Shuyong, Chinese athletics head coach, Liu said he feels very sorry for his sudden pull-out that disappointed all.

China's leading news portals including Xinhuanet, Sohu and Sina all carry Liu's letter. The translation of the letter is as follows:

To all people who care about and support me:

Thanks for all the people who understand and support me. At this moment, I feel sorry and my heart goes to those who are still disappointed at my pull-out.

July 13, 2001, the day when Beijing won the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, marked my 18th birthday. My birthday celebrations happened to be connected with the jubilation over the successful bid. I was just an unknown athlete back then, but to compete at the Beijing Olympic Games is a dream for every athlete -- and I have been making 100 percent of my efforts to reach this goal.

My Olympic champion dream came true in the 2004 Athens Games. Since then, I set an unshakable goal to successfully defend my Olympic title on home soil. I've always loved facing challenges and have never quit. That's what I am. Just like when I stepped on Greek soil, I've always had faith in myself.

However, as I won more titles and received more attention and support, I've also felt growing pressure and disturbances in my life. I cannot go partying like other people of my age, and I can feel the expectations of the whole nation in every minute.

I know everyone was keenly expecting me to run yesterday. I wanted, as much as you did, to cross the finish, a scene you have already got used to. But my feet...Please believe me. The sadness and pain I have been through are never less than yours. Please believe me. I am still the same old Liu Xiang you have known.

I really appreciate the text messages and phones calls I received from you, my friends, after I withdrew from the race injured. From the bottom of my heart, I thank my friends who understand, support and encourage me all the way. I also thank the Chinese people for supporting me and awarding me huge honors all these years.

I believe in my capability. You will see a faster Liu Xiang.

Olympic dream leads to greener lifestyle
+ -
14:04, August 21, 2008
Wang Meng quit driving his car after Beijing adopted the current plan allowing cars on the road on alternate days based on license plates ending in odd or even numbers. Even on the even-number days, when he is allowed to drive, Wang still rides his folding bicycle to and from work at the International Broadcasting Center in the Olympic Green.

Not only that, the 27 year-old Beijing native has installed energy saving light bulbs in his home.

This summer, he started to use an electric fan instead of the air conditioner in the evenings when it is not too hot because it is "healthier", he said.

Wang Meng is not the only one whose daily life has gone through some subtle changes in recent months, as the city encourages the public to play an active role in protecting the environment - part of its efforts to hold a "Green Olympics."

Many residents in Beijing are changing their habits to embrace a greener lifestyle. In the public's mind, there is a growing awareness of energy saving and environmental protection.

"The stringent overall environmental requirements of the Olympic Games actually served as a catalyst for various measures and the countdown to the Games made it even more urgent for the entire society to take action, " according to Zhang Lingge, an environmental awareness promotion project researcher at the Environmental Defense Fund, a US-based nonprofit organization.

Living near the north Fifth Ring Road of the city, Wang Meng has witnessed an increase in the number of bicycle riders.

"The 25-minute ride is not troublesome at all. For me, it's just picking up an old habit again. In middle school, I used to ride my bicycle every day, as most of my classmates did," Wang said.

The recent hike in the price of gasoline also contributes to the increase in people using pedal power, he added.

Wang bought five energy-saving light bulbs at 1 yuan each, thanks to subsidies from both the central government and the Beijing municipal government for downtown residents, and installed all of them.

"These bulbs can help cut my electricity bills in the long run," he said. "Besides, they are not that expensive."

Wide media coverage on the threat of global warming and the urgency of environmental protection has contributed to raising public awareness.

Many environmental organizations have produced creative media campaigns to generate public interest, including for the Olympics.

Teaming up with 11 former Olympic gold medalists, the China Environment Awareness Program (CEAP) created eight public service advertisements to raise public environmental consciousness toward a "Green Olympics."

Although each of the public service ads lasts only 30 seconds, the eight advertisements address key environmental protection issues, such as sorting trash for recycling, saving water resources, protecting bio-diversity, and using more clean energy.

These public service ads are being broadcast on various TV channels, on the monitor screens within the Olympic facilities and at stadiums and on public transportation systems.

Popular athletes deliver the green messages. In one ad, when star badminton player Bao Chunlai stays late, head badminton coach Li Yongbo turns off the extra lights in the training center, reminding the audience that "saving energy can be as easy as pie. "

In another ad, four-time Olympic table tennis champion Deng Yaping beats her rival by using both sides of the paddle. So, Deng exhorts, print on both sides of a piece of paper.

"On the battleground of climate change, we need more 'green champions'. I believe these athletes' influence will help people translate the green concepts into practice," said Kishan Khoday, assistant country director of the United Nations Development Project in China.

In China, new laws and regulations are helping to guide the public toward greener practices.

As of June 1st, free plastic shopping bags have been banned all over the country. Consumers have turned to woven baskets, or the more fashionable "eco-friendly cloth bags".

Those who do pay for plastic bags are trying to buy as few as possible, reversing an old mindset prevalent before the ban.

A similar initiative requiring offices, hotels, malls and other large buildings to set air conditioners no lower than 26 C in the summer is expected to become law.

Visitors can see solar-powered streetlights at scenic spots in the city's suburbs. Some traffic lights in the city are also solar-powered.

A survey jointly conducted by CEAP and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences this year shows that environmental protection is listed as China's fourth most important social issue, after healthcare, employment and the income gap between urban and rural areas.

"There has been a distinct increase in public awareness of environmental protection," Jia Feng, a Ministry of Environmental Protection official who heads the CEAP program said.

The green goals set by the country's 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-10) to cut energy consumption by 20 percent and major pollutants by 10 percent toward a more sustainable mode of economic development has contributed to increased public environmental awareness, he said.

The Environmental Defense Fund has been leading a green campaign since 2005, trying to persuade Beijing citizens to adopt more environmental friendly ways of commuting in the city.

The campaign has chosen Shanghai, the host city of the 2010 World Expo, and Guangzhou, the host of the 16th Asian Games in 2012 as their next destinations after the Beijing Olympics, according to Zhang.

"Apart from all the official measures taken to clean up the environment, the real legacy of the Green Olympics for China is to make a greener lifestyle both belief and practice in the society at large," Zhang said.

U.S. sails to women's volleyball final in 24 years
+ -
14:21, August 21, 2008
The United States re-entered the Olympic women's volleyball final in 24 years on Thursday after upsetting three-time champion Cuba in a surprising 3-0.

The last time they contented for a gold was in 1984 Los Angeles Games, where they surrendered the championship title to the Chinese women, led by their current head coach "Iron Hammer" Lang Ping.

They will face either defending champions China or world's No. 1 Brazil in the final scheduled on Saturday.

The Americans shrugged off the straight-set loss to the Cuban high jumpers in the preliminaries and wrapped up the sweet revenge 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17.

The two sides both started strongly before a 11-11 draw, when the U.S. broke the tie with lethal spikes by Tayyiba Haneef-Park to lead 14-11. Danielle Scott-Arruda and Heather Bown helped to enlarge the gap to 24-20. With an unanswered spike of Kim Willoughby, the U.S. took the opener 25-20.

The Americans dominated the second set with powerful serves, while Cuba lost their rhythm and their service errors at the crucial points helped the U.S. to take the effortless second set 25-16.

The Cubans seemed to have lost their willingness to fight in the decider, while Scott and Logan Tom kept launching brilliant spikes from the middle of the court and the back row. The U.S. sailed on the track to win with a solid lead 21-16. Cuba pulled back one point with a spike of Yanelis Stantos, but that was the furthest they could go. Stunning Willoughby scored three points in row for the U.S. to seal their historic victory 25-17.

From Aug. 7 to Aug. 20, supervisors from the Olympic food safety inspection team have monitored more than 1.6 million shares of food and not a single food safety accident was reported, said Tang Yunhua, spokeswoman for food safety coordination with the Beijing Food Safety Administration Office.

Catering to hundreds of athletes, officials and reporters from around the globe during the Olympics has always been a challenge to the Olympic host cities. Official figurers showed that the Beijing Games have attracted more than 10,000 athletes and 26,000 journalists.

Tang said the Beijing food safety monitoring team have done numerous food checks to food suppliers since February 2007 to ensure safe food from farm to fork.

"A total of 16,610 samples (from food suppliers) have been checked with a qualification rate of 98.67 percent. The not-up-to-standard foods were detected at the farming bases or in the production lines," she said.

"We have sealed or destroyed all of them (the substandard food materials) and the suppliers concerned were fined. By doing so, we have ensured that all the foods going out of the production lines to the Olympic tables were 100 percent up to the standard," she said.

The official said Beijing has paid special attention to the four important links in the food supply chain, namely the farms, production, distribution and transportation, and canteens.

"First of all, we have made sure that all the farms and the animal farms are following strict standards and have a strict control and ban of high toxins, high residue pesticide as well as animal feeds and animal drugs. We are able to conduct a full process tracing of animal products," she said.

"Secondly, in the production process we have done inspections batch by batch and had a very strict control of the exit of the food product," said Tang.

In the distribution and transportation process, the official said the city has installed high-tech tools such as global positioning system, electronic labeling and temperature censors vehicles to track the vehicles and control the temperature inside.

The city has also carried out thorough training of the cooking staff in the final catering link and kept the filing of the menu, raw material and sampling of prepared food, said Tang.

Meanwhile, in response to possible human criminal act of toxic food, the city has equipped food monitoring staff with fast inspection tools which can detect more than 20 toxins and 40 dangerous substances.

To prevent potential chemical or radio active contamination, the city has built up its food accident emergency response database which included response and medical relief measures to various biological, chemical and radio active substances and the case studies of similar incidents in the past, Tang said.

While enhancing safety check to the foods for the Olympics, Tang said great efforts have been made to improve the food safety for the general public.

"We realize that only when the overall level of food safety in Beijing is greatly improved, can the food safety for the Olympics be better secured. So the measures taken during the Olympics have already been implemented for the general public and will continue to be in place after the Olympics," she said.
