Dearest Jane,
Oh, I was so happy to get your message last week! You are so busy these days, I'm sure, with the contest and with the many activities as usual. May blessings accompany your every step!
The poem is so pure and innocent. It must be hard to understand how other countries can judge your own country so harshly. Please do not be sad. We are created to focus on the constructive forces in the world, not the destructive forces. The Olympics has always been a symbol of peace and harmony among different people. China is now an example of that living spirit in its aim to create a harmonious society - what other nation is making societal harmony its priority? It is really a blessing to see China emerging with its extraordinary, new vision.
I was living in Kunming when the airplanes hit the Twin Towers. Many of my college classmates died there, and my brother narrowly escaped death himself. I cried for two days. My close Chinese friends were very kind, but on the international news I learned there was an explosion of internet activity in China - people laughing and making fun of how such a mighty nation could be brought down so low. I think I felt the same way you feel now.
No nation and no people are perfect. We are all on the thorny road to perfection. It is natural to love one's country, but it takes divine power to love the world. Your English Corner is really a model of that divine power. You often say you are a common person or "small potato"! But your pure actions have a most powerful influence beyond our imagination. They are eternal.
Abiding love,
