A major earthquake measuring 7.8 Richter Scale jolted Wenchuan County of Southwest China’s Sichuan province at 2:28 p.m. on Monday. The quake was also felt in the capital city of Beijing and Xinhua reporters in Zhengzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing also reported major tremors at around 2 p.m. Monday.

Hi Jane, As a fundraiser I was had a idea.  People can bring money and just donate....we've all been doing this....but how about if people bring something to sell and all the money goes to the relief effort.  I might bring a bunch of flowers or a plant that cost me 10 rmb and hopefully sell it for 50 rmb or I might bring a suprise package and it would have dried fruits and nuts and candy in it that cost me 20 rmb and I would sell it for 100 rmb.  People will want to buy it to find out what is inside it and the money goes to a good cause.  We could bring some special things from home, such as a lovely picture frame etc and people would want to buy them.  You might want to organize a silent auction where everyone who attends gets a secret number handed to them when they arrive like B112 or B113 and if they see an item on the table that they want they would write down their number B112 and how much they are willing to purchase the item for.  Let's say it is my flowers again.....B112 wrote down his number and said 20 rmb will if B114 wants it he would write down his number underneith and say 25 rmb and the maybe B07 would see the flowers and write down her number and 30 rmb.......I would be happy to purchase some items to donate towards this fun way of raising money where the people actually get to take something home with them.......if not I will just donate money, mayqwansee.

Hi Jane I have about 20 wrapped gifts that are labeled Male, Female, Child or Anyone.  The childrens are about 6 rmb and the adults start at 15 and go up to 40 rmb.  I hope that people will pay way more for them so that alot of money will be collected for the quake surviviors.  So just lay them on the table and tape down a piece of lined paper under them so that people can write their names and their bid amount.  Hopefully the large one will bring in 100 rmb or more.  The prices that are marked are what they cost me to purchase. A major earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County of southwest China's Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. Monday, the State Seismological Bureau said, revising a previous figure of 7.6.

The epicenter of the quake was located 31.0 degrees north latitude and 103.4 degrees east longitude, the bureau said.

With a population of 111,800, Wenchuan lies in southeast part of the Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, 146 km to the northwest of Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan.

Wenchuan is home to the Wolong Nature Reserve, China's leading research and breeding base of the endangered giant pandas.

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale jolted Tongzhou District in east Beijing at 2:35 p.m. Monday. The quake's epicenter was located 39.8 north latitude and 116.8 east longitude, according to the State Seismological Bureau.

Xinhua reporters in many other parts of China also reported tremors. Reporters in Chengdu said they saw cracks on walls of some residential buildings in the downtown areas, but no building collapsed.

The telecom networks in Chengdu and Chongqing cities broken down for a while after the quake. People complained they were unable to have phone calls on the fixed line or the mobile.

The quake was also felt in Zhengzhou, capital of central Henan Province, where people rushed out of homes and offices and took to the streets.

Many said they felt dizzy and saw the pendant lamps on their ceilings swinging back and forth.

In Lanzhou, capital of the northwest China's Gansu Province, the quake sent many parked cars by the roadside buzzing.

Xinhua reporters in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, said they felt the office building rocking back and forth for about four minutes.

A retiree in Leshan City of Sichuan Province said over the telephone that a wall in her garden collapsed, while a repairman in Chongqing saw the ceiling of his factory shamble and alarmed the staff, who soon left the building.

In Shanghai, people were evacuated from office buildings in Hongqiao and Nanjing Road.

No casualties have been reported yet.

I am keeping deep concerns over the quake from website and TV news and praying for all the people all the time. I pray that light bursting from darkness, strength born from weakness and life emerging from death; I pray that overwhelming darkness may endure for a night but it will never over the radiant light of the morning.
I believe all of us feel deeply sorrowful about the loss of lives. I believe all of us want to try our best to help the people who are crying and suffering from tragedy.
We are going to organize a fundraiser provide for the needs of the people in disaster areas relief of disaster victims and their families this Friday night in the Xiaoshan English Corner. The Children’s English Corner will hold the same gathering this Saturday night.

Chinese leader Hu Jintao urged governments at all levels to regard earthquake rescue and relief as the top priority at a high profile meeting late Monday evening.

Hu, state President and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), presided over the meeting of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the CPC. The meeting called on the army, armed police and paramilitary forces, as well as medical personnel to go to the quake-hit areas as soon as possible, and mount all-out efforts to save the injured and reduce the impact caused by the havoc.

Monday's quake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province in southwest China at 2:28 p.m., resulting in nearly 9,000 deaths reported so far. Tremors were also reported in over half of China's provinces and municipalities, according to the China Seismological Bureau.

The meeting demanded sufficient supply of food, medicine, clothes and tents to the quake-hit areas and that telecommunication, power and water supplies and transportation access must be restored as soon as possible.

Local governments should keep a close watch on the latest development of the earthquake and its aftershocks, and guard against earthquake-induced disasters causing new casualties.

Those who spread rumors to sabotage disaster relief work would be dealt with according to China's laws and regulations.

The meeting decided to set up a disaster relief headquarters with Premier Wen Jiabao as head, and Li Keqiang and Hui Liangyu, both vice premiers, as deputy heads.

The meeting called on all party members in the quake-hit areas to devote themselves to protect the interests of the public on the front line of disaster relief work.

One of my relatives lives in Chengdu doing business there.....We can't get in touch with them till this early morning at about 5 am.......Chengdo is about 100km far away from Wenchuan where caused nearly 5.6 magnitude quake...A river nearby her place, as she said it sounds like many people are at the same labbering into it and the rock is moving under ground...she dashed out room barefoot saw many people especially women crying on the road......so we can't imagine the status at Wenchuan......

虽然离开家乡多年，但作为土生土长的四川人，一直关注着家乡的发展变化，故乡的一草一木，也都是我的牵挂。得知家乡受灾，我夜不能寐，往事一幕幕的浮现在我眼前...

已过不惑之年的我，在成都青羊区实业街35号一栋老院子里出生，长大。小时候扛着扁担挑水，总会经过门口那对被岁月打磨得光滑发亮的石狮子；为了补贴家用，年迈的奶奶拉板车糊纸盒，晚上回到家还要坐在灯下给我们讲故事...这些，都是我童年记忆中最深刻的印象。

高考时，身为小职员的父亲深夜与我促膝谈心，语重心长的告诫我：将相本无种，男儿当自强。这句话一直激励着我走过这么多年的风风雨雨春华秋实。

这些年来，我操着那口被许多人戏称为“川普”的“椒盐普通话”走遍大江南北四海五洲。作为四川人，也一直为人杰地灵的天府故乡自豪着，感动着。蜀都的山水把我养大，四川人特有的坚韧与力量支撑着我度过人生一幕幕的挑战与考验，而国家的发展与兴旺也终于让我们有了今天的工作成绩。

家乡受灾,全家人都非常难过担心。已过古稀之年的老母亲一直生活在成都，至今却一直联系不上。此时此刻，我万分揪心，恨不得能立刻飞回母亲身旁，回到父老乡亲身边，陪他们一起面对这突如其来的灾难！

也想为父老乡亲们抗灾救灾做一点力所能及的事。无法入眠的我和夫人杨蓉蓉一起打开电脑，链接到四川省政府的网站，写下了我们最真挚的情感和心绪，代表我们全家，向在地震中不幸遇难的教师和孩子们，以及因为受灾而不能正常教学和读书的老师及学生们，表示最深切的哀悼与最诚挚的慰问，并捐款人民币三百万元，愿灾区的学生们能早日回到校园，愿家乡人民能早日恢复正常生活。

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has pledged to save as many lives as the rescue teams can in southwest China's Sichuan Province which was hit by a major quake on Monday afternoon.

Wen made the remarks during his inspections at a hospital and a school in Dujiangyan, a city northwest of the provincial capital Chengdu, partly damaged by the quake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale.



Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has pledged to save as many lives as the rescue teams can in southwest China's Sichuan Province which was hit by a major quake on Monday afternoon.

The road from Dujiangyan to Wenchuan, epicenter of the quake, was blocked by rock and mud slides, holding up rescue, medical and other disaster relief teams in the city.

"Please just hold on, people are going to get you out of there!" the Premier told the people trapped in the collapsed buildings of the hospital in a loudspeaker.

When comforting patients and medical staffs in the hospital, Wen asked rescuing troops to search every corner for people waiting for salvation and carry out the rescue work in an orderly way.

"If there is a gleam of hope, we will do all the best to save the people," the Premier vowed at a middle school of Juyuan town, adding that the rescuing team would not rest until the last one under the ruin wassaved.

Premier Wen told officials at the temporary headquarters for disaster relief in Dujiangyan that roads to Wenchuan should be recovered as soon as possible at all costs.

"The road is the key for the relief work since we can only know the situation there when we can send people and we can only transport the injured out when the road is clean," Wen said.

The death toll from a Monday earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province has climbed to 9,219, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

The 7.8-magnitude quake has left 9,219 people dead in eight affected provinces and municipality including Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou and Hubei, the ministry said in a release issued at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Of the killed, 8,993 were in Sichuan, 132 in Gansu, 85 in Shaanxi, eight in Chongqing and one in Yunnan, the ministry said.

The tremor also leveled some 500,000 rooms in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, the ministry said strong winds and hailstorms lashed Hubei, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces from Sunday evening to early Monday morning, affecting more than 630,000 people.

北京时间2008年5月12日14时28分04秒，在四川省汶川县（北纬31.0度，东经103.4度）发生7.8级地震。地震过后，救援工作正在有条不紊地开展——胡锦涛总书记立即作出重要指示，要求尽快抢救伤员，保证灾区人民生命安全；温家宝总理乘专机抵达四川成都，赶往地震灾区，指挥抢险救灾工作；中国红十字会12日立即启动自然灾害救助一级响应预案……

大地剧烈地震动过后，每个人的心灵也受到了同样剧烈地震撼。面对这场突如其来的灾难，我们究竟应该如何面对，我们又该为此做些什么？

巨大的自然灾害，几乎不可避免会给人带来恐慌——虽然远隔千里，昨天下午，在我所居住的城市，不少市民为之色变。一个令人感到温暖的细节是，短暂的慌乱过后，几乎所有人都在第一时间想到给自己的亲友问候平安——一个个电话、短信过后，一股股暖流涌上了我的心头。伴随着爱心涟漪的不断扩大，温情关怀的范围也在不断地扩大——凭借现代化的通讯方式，关心、祝福的话语在我们身边无限传递。

无论将军或士兵 谁先到给谁立功

　　一场罕见的大地震，使偏僻的汶川道路中断、通信受阻，成了令人十分关注的地区。解放军和武警部队多路兵力挺进汶川救援，成都军区司令员李世明下令“谁先到就给谁立功”。

　　司令嗓门越来越大

　　13日10时，成都军区抗震救灾联合指挥部里，成都军区司令员李世明对着电话大声命令：“带上精干人员，不惜一切代价向汶川进发！”

　　电话那头传来某集团军军长许勇嘶哑的声音。



几个小时前，这位将军率领一支30人的先遣队，冒着余震频频、山体滑坡的危险，于大雨中突入这次地震的中心汶川县映秀镇，并已经救出300名伤员。

　　一支50人的后续队伍正继续赶往映秀镇。

　　“不管将军还是士兵，告诉大家，谁先到就给谁立功！”电话此起彼伏，因为通信困难，所有的参谋人员都在声嘶力竭地对着电话喊话，李世明的嗓门也越来越大：“焦点在汶川，制高点也在汶川，关键的关键在汶川，你们要连夜出发，进入汶川！”

　　困难是超乎寻常的。先遣队的报告说：路上到处都是塌方，70％以上的路面损坏，桥梁全部被毁。

　　军长和副司令带队

　　许勇军长在率队继续向汶川挺进的同时，还有一支救援队伍也正从西北向汶川艰难挺进。这支由四川省军区副司令员李亚洲带队的突击队，刚刚完成向重灾区理县32公里的惊险行军，又在向汶川的征途疾驰。

　　还有一支700人的队伍，也正从东北的重灾区茂县向汶川挺进着，他们在茂县北20公里的地方遭遇塌方，之后便与指挥部失去了联系。

　　“他们肯定还在继续前进！”李世明又是担心，又是坚定地断言。

　　每小时急进6公里

　　“北斗一号”卫星导航定位系统监测到，一支携带了“北斗一号”终端机的部队，从13日中午12时开始，沿着马尔康、黑水、理县到汶川的317国道，以每小时6公里左右的速度一路急进，6个小时前进了近40公里。

竹市富新镇五福二小近300名小学生被埋，160余人遇难

　　新快报讯 (记者 王华平)“我的好孙子呀,你走了爷爷怎么过呀?”昨天下午1时,四川省绵竹富新镇67岁的黄清泰老人,在雨中泪眼模糊的凝望着摆在地上已死去的孙子付豪,痛哭失声。

　　年仅11岁的付豪是该小学四年级学生。令人痛心的是，在此次地震事故中，与小付豪同时遇难的还有该校160多名小学生，他们均被地震中突然倒塌的教室活活压死。

　　生死相隔　老师亲人热泪洒学校

　　昨天上午7时，记者到达绵竹富新镇五福二小学校门口时，触目惊心的一幕让记者揪心不已：在校门口两边近百米长的过道旁，许多父母齐齐跪在地上，几乎所有人都以泪洗面。



在他们面前，摆放着一具具用不同颜色包裹的小孩尸体。

　　“我可怜的孩子呀，我们死也不愿让你走呀！”现场多名家长仍在不停地对着再也无法醒来的孩子痛哭，多名家长及亲属甚至伤心过度一度晕厥过去了。

　　与校门外一样的，是学校内倒塌校舍上紧急的挖掘抢救场面，在现场，仍旧围满了数百名焦急等待被埋学生消息的家长。

　　无法逃离　教学楼瞬间轰然倒塌

　　“地震来得太突然了，太猛烈了，我们的学生根本来不及逃，房屋就倒下了！”在现场，二小学校地李校长痛心的告诉记者，昨天下午2时28分，大地及楼房突然摇晃起来，“人站在地上就像是被人推着跳舞，人在楼层上是就像筛豆子，整个世界地动山摇！”当意识到地震后，正在上课的老师便立即组织所有在教室内上课的学生往外逃，“但让所有人意想不到的是，仅仅1分钟左右时间，教学楼轰然倒塌。”李校长告诉记者，倒塌的教学楼共三层，为该校四、五、六年级310多名学生所用。“当时很多学生都在楼梯口往下跑，但都来不及了！”刘老师伤心地对记者称，随着教学楼突然倒塌，楼中的师生甚至连叫喊都来不及就从自己的眼前消失了，“而不少学生都已经跑出门口，但因没有跑及时，被倒下的碎石残酷地压在废墟中。”

　　母亲身亡　镇委书记忍痛救学生

　　事故发生后，当地群众全部投入到了这场生死大营救。他们用双手拔开废墟，尝试救出被埋的孩子。在现场长达24小时的生死大营救中，所有人都没有离开半步。该镇女镇长张勤眼睛含着泪水和群众们一起营救孩子，镇委书记李传瑞在得知母亲被倒塌房屋压死的情况下，还是在现场指挥，直到最后一个学生被救出。

　　“从事发后，所有参加救援的人员，一刻也没有离开，一秒也没有停过！”现场该镇干部严礼哭着对记者说，也正是由于救援及时，多名被埋的学生给成功救了出来。而记者在现场看到，数百名救援人员中很多人的手被刺破甚至鲜血直流，“他们所有人已连续工作了19小时，没喝没睡！”新快报
